We visited seven bakeries around Upper Hutt and have given our honest opinion on all of them. We hope this helps you to choose the bakery of your dreams for your next lunch break or family outing.

Yummy food, good coffee & a nice vibe, Cake & Kitchen is a notch above the rest.

Known for delicious food and coffee, and trendy vintage-retro décor, you are met with a warm and inviting atmosphere the moment you step through the doors. Just a 2-minute walk (quite literally) from the Upper Hutt train station, this neighbourhood café is full of baked goods, fresh sandwiches, delicious pastries and a selection of scrumptious lunch and brunch options.

Located in the old Dunlop Tyres Factory lives a food and beer lover’s dream! Only a short walk from the Upper Hutt train station, Brewtown presents to you a café, restaurant, distillery and three craft beer breweries—Panhead Custom Ales, Te Aro Brewing Company, and Boneface Brewing.

If craft beer isn’t your thing, visit WildKiwi Distillery to try one of their 100+ whiskeys from around the world and handmade spirits. All breweries have a restaurant offering, you can also get delicious plant-based options from Get Fixed Bicycle Café, and great eats from Fermented Bar and Eatery.

Set amongst five hectares of magical gardens lives the quaint and quiet Aston Norwood Café.

The tranquil gardens make the perfect place to unpack a picnic, or you can look over the grounds as you sip at a fresh brew from the café. Oozing luxury and elegance, choose from a menu of delicious dishes or spoil yourself to a Devonshire Tea or High Tea experience. Enjoy a homemade scone and pot of tea with a view of flowering cherries, maples, rhododendrons, azaleas, and camellias.

 

Freshly baked bread, delicious coffee and cabinet treats, Dough is always filled with scrumptious baked goods.

With a total of five sites across Wellington, we are lucky to have three in Upper Hutt. Grab a coffee and watch the hard labour of bread making at Dough HQ, visit the Doughnut Wagon for some extra treats, or enjoy the atmosphere at Dough Bakery. Take your pick from an impressive menu of toasties and eggs, or a cabinet filled with freshly made doughnuts and sandwiches.

Lofty ceilings and a spacious setting, dining at Fig Tree is always a delight if you’re brunching, lunching or enjoying a coffee. With spectacular coffee and a consistently good menu and cabinet items, it’s no wonder why Fig Tree is a local favourite. They even have a variety of dietary friendly food.

We truly believe that Gerrys Charcoal Chicken is home to the best chicken in the whole Wellington Region! Their philosophy on cooking has always been ‘Fresh is the secret to good food’. Well known for their delicious roasts and chips, they are also efficient, innovative and friendly.

Grind is an Upper Hutt special and local favourite that is known for its friendly staff, great coffee, and amazing milkshakes. From specialty glow in the dark shakes to flavours for every occasion, Grind Coffee Lounge’s menu is full of the best kind of surprises.

 

A boutique bakery full of character and taste.

Die-hard fans of Jeans make the journey from all over the region to grab an almond croissant and pain au chocolat. Word on the street is these fly off the shelves after an hour of opening! Not only do they have delicious homemade pastries, we’ve heard their cookies are out of this world. Plus the frequently changing specials keep things fresh and interesting. The key word for Jeans is ‘authentic’ they pride themselves on making as many products in-house as possible, including its jams, pickles, kimchi and sauerkraut.

Dumplings made with the best natural ingredients and a pinch of love.

It takes the perfect combination of delicious ingredients to make tasty dumplings, and Tinas Dumplings have done just that. Stepping instore, you’re hit with the aromatic flavours of caramalised shallots and garlic before being greeted by the one and only Tina. All of her flavours are made with natural ingredients without the use of preservatives, MSG or artificial colours or flavours. They are also free from nuts and dairy and available in gluten-free options too.

With a focus on fresh, high quality ingredients Traditional Thai has been the go-to Thai restaurant in Upper Hutt since 2001. The family business has honed and developed their menu into what it is today, bringing part of their home country and culture to Upper Hutt.
